The guideline is intended for all clinicians in any setting who are likely to diagnose and manage patients with Bell’s palsy.






The aetiology is still unclear, but it is known that the symptoms are caused by swelling and inflammation of the facial nerve. Steroids: The role in treatment of Bell's palsy in children is unclear, however streroids appear to benefit adults, particularly if given within 72 hours of onset and if complete palsy present.

There was moderate-quality evidence that the combination reduced long-term sequelae such as excessive tear production and synkinesis. Prednisolone (1mg/kg/day PO daily for 10 days) may be considered for Bell's palsy presenting within 72 hours of onset. There were no serious adverse effects in any group.
